Government Websites
IRS. The IRS has a wealth of information including forms and publications on-line. A great
way to answer questions about how the IRS sees the world. Very accessible.

United States Patent & Trademark Office. You can easily search this website and find out
if your business name or slogan are available, or if they have already been trademarked.

California Franchise Tax Board. This is the place to visit if you have questions regarding
your state income tax filing or just need state income tax forms or publications.

State Board of Equalization. This site shares information regarding California sales tax. Forms and publications are available as well as explanations regarding what is and is not taxable.

California State Department of Industrial Relations. This site is the best place to read up
on current state overtime regulations. A bit dense, but a thorough source of information.

EDD. The Employment Development Department’s site offers forms and publications as
well as explanations regarding unemployment rules and regulations and a Job Link.

City & County of San Francisco. Links to all city departments.

City & County of San Francisco – County Clerk’s Office. The County Clerk’s office links
you directly to information on applying for a business license, among other things.

Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA is a tremendous resource, and this site is
their national site. Definitely check this out.

SBA – San Francisco District Office. The SFSBA site has information on local
programming (i.e. seminars etc), as well as great links to support materials such as
"How to Write a Business Plan" and others. Very valuable information.

Chambers of Commerce
California Chamber of Commerce. For those who want to play on the state level, this is
the organization. They publish an extensive labor law digest that some companies may find well worth the investment.

San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is perhaps your best advocate and
resource locally. Website offers current events, a membership directory, and many other
items of interest. I encourage you to join the Chamber and get involved locally.

Golden Gate Business Association. The nation’s first Gay & Lesbian Chamber of
Commerce was founded here in San Francisco. The GGBA offers a strong spirit of
community, and I've made some of my best business associations through the monthly
mixers and networking (BEN) groups. I highly encourage involvement as a great way to
build strong relationships throughout the San Francisco business community. The GGBA
maintains a membership directory in print & on-line.
